(|Beta III|)
A street on the planet Beta III.Beta III is in Star System C-111. The U.S.S. Enterprise visited Beta III on Stardate 3156 to find some trace of the Starship Archon that disappeared at this planet 100 years ago. The inhabitants had faces of vacant mindless contentment. They greet each other by placing their hand over their heart and saying, "Joy to you." The young on Beta III celebrated Festival, during which they went wild. It began on the 'red hour', at 6 pm, and lasted 12 hours until exactly 6 am. The Body absorbs its enemies. It only kills when it has to. When the Archons came, they were free, out of control, opposing the will of Landru. Many were killed. Many more were absorbed. There was evidence of advanced technology on Beta III. It came from a time before Landru, which some say was 6,000 years ago. There was war on Beta III. Their world was destroying itself. Landru was their leader. He changed the world. He took them back to a simple time, a time of peace and tranquility. Landru's will was carried out by Lawgivers who were considered infallible. The inhabitants of Beta III in the Hall of Audiences could hear Landru. Landru was a computer. The good of the Body is its Prime Directive. Those that are not of the Body are absorbed. One could be absorbed by being touched by a Lawgiver's staff, or by being placed in an absorption chamber. Kirk and Spock convinced Landru that it was harming the Body, so Landru destroyed itself for the good of the Body. Sociologist Lindstrom remained behind on Beta III with a party of experts who will help restore the planet's culture to human form. (TOS: Return of the Archons)
