(|Asteroid|)
The U.S.S. Enterprise encountered an asteroid field with a Shiller rating of 35 on Stardate 1329. (TOS: Mudd's Women)

Contributed by: Clare Bradley

(|Black Hole|)
A celestial phenomenon caused by the collapse of a neutron star. The gravity generated becomes so great that even light cannot escape. Extremely small black holes are known as quantum singularities.

(|class-C gravimetric field distortion|)
Warp output must be within 300-312 millicochranes to prevent fusion of the dilithium matrix unless the spatial compression index is greater than 5.62% or the ship is within two parsecs of a Class-C gravimetric field distortion. (ENT: Doctor's Orders)

(|Co-orbital satellites|)
A pair of objects (such as planetoids) whose orbits are very close to each other. Under certain circumstances, a near collision between the two bodies can result in each object assuming the orbit previously occupied by the other. In other words, the two objects trade orbits.

(|Comet|)
The Comet Icarus 4.Known Comets:
Comet Icarus 4: While trying to evade the U.S.S. Enterprise on Stardate 1709, a Romulan bird of prey changed course towards Comet Icarus 4. They intended to obscure themselves from the Enterprise's sensors, but the Enterprise tracked them by the dispersal pattern of the particles in the comet's tail. (TOS: Balance of Terror)

(|Cosmic string fragment|)
A nearly infinitely thin filament of almost infinitely dense matter. Although a string fragment can have the gravitational pull of one hundred stars, it is no wider than a proton. Cosmic strings emanate a characteristic set of subspace frequencies that are caused by the decay of atomic particles along the string's event horizon. In 2367, the USS Enterprise-D used these frequencies to help guide a school of two-dimensional creatures back to their home in a cosmic string fragment.

(|Dark matter proto-comet|)
This phenomenon is only theoretical. It is suspected that it is attracted to any source of antimatter and neutralizes it upon contact. (VOY: Good Shepherd)

(|Dark-matter Nebula|)
A shuttle pod from the Enterprise NX-01 is able to excite a dark matter nebula, which is otherwise invisible. An interstellar gas cloud that emits little or no light or other energy. In the mid 22nd century, the Vulcans conducted experiments where they were able to excite small quantities of dark matter by bombarding it with metrion particles. The Enterprise NX-01 later succeeded in exciting a nebula with torpedoes modified to emit metrion particles. (ENT: First Flight)

(|Emission nebula|)
An interstellar gas cloud that is a source of electromagnetic radiation. Emission nebulas can prevent cloaking devices from functioning.

(|Energy vortex|)
An unexplained time-space disturbance that occurred near the Endicor system. It was responsible for destroying an alternate version of the USS Enterprise-D in 2365, and sending an alternate version of Captain Picard 6 hours back in time. The crew was able to avoid destruction of the ship by piloting it directly into the center of the vortex.

(|Great Bloom, The|)
The destruction of Shinzon's vessel left a spatial anomaly called the Great Bloom. Ships can hide in the vicinity of it. Donatra hid her fleet there. Donatra's ships were lost in the Great Bloom. She requested Captain Riker's help in locating them. The Great Bloom appeared to be great loops of energetic orange and iridescent green stretched for hundreds of kilometers. When the U.S.S. Titan scanned the great bloom, they were drawn over the event horizon. They were transported 210,000 light years to the Small Magellanic Cloud. (ST: Titan: Taking Wing by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels)

(|Hypergiant|)
Enterprise NX-01 studies a hypergiant.A star that is on the verge of a supernova. This final stage can take hundreds of years. (ENT: Cogenitor)

(|Interphase|)
Our universe coexists with a multitude of others in the same physical space. At certain times an area of their space overlaps ours. This is the time of interphase, during which we can connect with the other universe. The Defiant and Captain Kirk were caught between universes on Stardate 5693. The dimensional structure of each universe is totally dissimilar. Any use of power disturbs it. The crew was affected by the region of space. The molecular structure of the brain tissues in the central nervous system were deteriorating, causing murderous rage. McCoy investigated a tharagen derivative as a cure for the effects of interphase. McCoy mixed it with alcohol when making his cure. The cure deadens certain nerve inputs to the brain. (TOS: The Tholian Web)

(|Ion Storms|)
Storm that occur in space. Ships entering ion storms encounter pressure, variance, stress, and various levels of force. (TOS: Court Martial)

Storms of Ions in varying intensity. Can cause damage to shuttles and the more powerful ones can damage starships. (VOY: Once Upon a Time)

Contributed by: Clare Bradley

(|Kuiper Belt|)
Odo's runabout attempts to hide in a Kuiper Belt.Belt of comet fragments that orbits stars at a great distance. (DS9: Treachery, Faith and the Great River)

(|Nebula|)
Metreon gas is sometimes found in nebulae. (ENT: E2)

For a listing of known nebulae, visit Stellar Cartography.

(|Neutronic Wavefront|)
The Enterprise NX-01 encounters a Neutronic Wavefront.A phenomena that travels at high warp and spans more than half a dozen light years. It is saturated with radiolytic isotopes, exposure to which kills humans within 3 minutes. The contain plasma eddies, which can rip a ship apart. They can be class-3, class-5, etc, depending on their intensity. Environmental suits can protect crewmembers in ships without energy shielding for up to 22 minutes. It can take days or weeks to pass through a wavefront. (ENT: The Catwalk)

(|Ompet oddity|)
Located in the Ompet Sector, the Ompet oddity is a shimmering array of blue and red hanging in space. From deep within, there seemed to be a light source. It exhibits a high degree of accelerated graviton activity and a high neutron flow. It was created by Trelane, Q's protégé. It is a temporal anomaly. (ST: TNG: Q-Squared by Peter David)

(|Plasma Disruption|)
DS9 is surrounded by a plasma disruption. In 2370, Deep Space Nine was temporarily evacuated due to a plasma disruption. They were forced to maintain only a skeleton crew. The plasma discharges can cause crystallization on space stations. Plasma storms are extremely rare. (DS9: Invasive Procedures)

(|Polaric Field|)
The Enterprise NX-01 in a Polaric Field. The Enterprise NX-01 encountered a polaric field in 2153 while in the Expanse. Neucleonic particles build up on the hull of ships in a polaric field. They are composed of mostly ferric ions, so unidentifiable elements, and the material that accumulates on the hull is magnetic. The substance also creates a diamagnetic field, which can disrupt ship systems if large enough. (ENT: Similitude)

Contributed by: Clare Bradley

(|Proto-nebula|)
A newly forming interstellar cloud of dust and gas. It can give off plasma surges with intense internal gravimetric shear forces.

(|Quantum singularity|)
The event horizon is the gravitational boundary surrounding a quantum singularity, from which no light or space-normal object can escape.

(|Quasar|)
Murasaki 312, a quasar-like formation. The U.S.S. Enterprise had standing orders to investigate quasars or quasar-like phenomena wherever they are found. Quasars are extremely disruptive. They can create ionic interference, and high levels of radiation. Murasaki 312 was a quasar-like formation that the U.S.S. Enterprise passed while en route to Makus III on Stardate 2821. When the Shuttlecraft Galileo investigated Murasaki 312, the shuttlecraft was drawn towards it. (TOS: The Galileo Seven)

(|Solar Plasma Ejection|)
Martok's ship triggers a solar plasma ejection while being pursued by Dominion ships. This phenomena can be triggered when an EM pulse is fired at a magnetic instability on a sun. The resulting ejection is large enough to incinerate everything within the 100 million km. (DS9: Shadows and Symbols)

(|Spatial Flexure|)
A tunnel through space made with deflector array. It interferes with the tractor beam. (VOY: Q2)

(|Subspace compression phenomenon|)
The U.S.S. Rubicon approaches a subspace compression phenomena while the U.S.S. Defiant waits. The U.S.S Defiant conducted research of a rare subspace compression phenomenon which was discovered in Federation space on Stardate 51474.2. The research could provide the key to creating Transwarp corridors through space. When the Rubicon, entered the phenomenon's vortex, it was subjected to severe spatial distortions, so a tractor beam was locked onto the runabout to minimize the effect.

The minimalisation progress began when they reached the edge of the accretion disk. They started to shrink, until they were half the size of a commbadge (about 1 cm tall). The runabout shrunk to approximately 10 cm in width. While getting smaller, even the space within their subatomic structure was shrinking.

When the Runabout entered the phenomenon, the Gamma Ray Flux was increasing. To protect the Runabout's crew, they lowered the runabout's blast shutters.

After the Defiant was attacked, the tractor beam disconnected, and sent the runabout into the phenomena uncontrolled. The effects didn't reverse and return them to normal size when they exited the anomaly because they didn't exit the anomaly via their original path. To regain their normal size, they had to re-enter the anomaly, and then to follow their original trajectory back out. (DS9: One Little Ship)

(|Subspace corridor|)
A subspace corridor is a tunnel through space that greatly decreases travel time. There was a subspace corridor located in a nebula in the Expanse. It spanned a distance of 11.6 LY. When Enterprise went through the subspace corridor, they were thrown back in time 117 years. T'Pol theorized that their the impulse wake destabilized the corridor causing it to shift in time. Ships can only travel one way through the corridor. (ENT: E2)

(|Subspace node|)
A subspace node is a bubble of curved space time. The Barrens is a subspace node. (ENT: Daedalus)

(|Subspace Rupture|)
A probe enters a subspace rupture.A subspace rupture was reported in the Hanoli system in the mid 23rd century. The phenomena draws in matter from the surrounding space. A Vulcan science mission to the Hanoli system detonated a pulse wave torpedo at the coordinates of the tear. Five minutes after they did, the rupture expanded radically. The Vulcan ship was wiped out along with the entire system. It reached a critical mass point and imploded and then disappeared from normal space altogether.

In 2369, a similar rupture appeared in the Bajoran system, but it turned out to be the product of Jadzia Dax's imagination, enhanced by aliens that were exploring the region. (DS9: If Wishes Were Horses)

(|Time-stream|)
An alien race that exists in a temporal inversion fold in the space-time matrix, or time-stream. The time-stream weaves through the galaxy like a thread. Harry Kim once intersected one of these time streams by accident, scrambling up history and events a bit. (VOY: Non Sequitur)

Contributed by: Clare Bradley

(|Wormhole|)
The Bajoran Wormhole.A subspace tunnel between two points in time and space. Most are very unstable, and their endpoints fluctuate wildly.
Known wormholes:

Bajoran wormhole:
The Bajoran wormhole has none of the resonance waves usually found in wormholes. The wormhole is not a natural phenomenon. It was artificially constructed, and is home to the Prophets. The wormhole is 160 million km from Bajor. The Prophets agreed to allow safe passage for ships traveling to the Gamma Quadrant. (DS9: Emissary) The Bajoran Wormhole is the first stable wormhole known to exist as neither end shifts locations. The wormhole was formed by unique particles called verterons. Verterons are self-sustaining in nature. Bajorans believe that ships are safely guided through the wormhole by the hands of the Prophets. (DS9: In the Hands of the Prophets)

Barzan wormhole: This wormhole was initially believed to be stable, with its terminus in the Gamma Quadrant. A later investigation proved that the wormhole's terminus was erratic, and a Ferengi shuttle that attempted to travel through it was lost in the Delta Quadrant. (TNG: The Price)
