(|Life Prolongation Project|)
The Life Prolongation Project was undertaken by the inhabitants of Miri's planet in order to prolong their life span in the 1960s. According to their life prolongation plan, what they thought they were accomplishing was that a person would age only one month for every 100 years of real time. The idea was to create a new series of diseases, a chain reaction of viruses, meant essentially to extend the life of the human cell immeasurably. Through some miscalculation, this virus annihilated the entire adult population in a very short period, leaving only the children. It granted long life to the children of the planet but they contracted the disease and died once they reached puberty. The disease causes adults to go mad before they die. Symptoms include fever, pain in the extremities, fuzziness of vision and the appearance of blue splotches on the skin. The older the victim is, the more rapid the progress of the disease. Spock was a carrier, but did not contract it. After they found a cure, the U.S.S. Enterprise left a medical team on the planet. (TOS: Miri)

(|Lyssarian desert larvae|)
Archer and Phlox examine a Lyssarian desert larvae.Lyssarian desert larvae are used in medical treatments. Its epidermal layer secretes a viral suppressant that can be used as a salve for cuts and bruises. When implanted with DNA from another species, it replicates that species life cycle at a rapidly accelerated rate, creating a mimetic simbiot. (ENT: Similitude)
