Tharagen is a nerve gas used by the Klingons. It is deadly, but only when used in pure form. McCoy investigated a tharagen derivative as a cure for the effects of interphase. T'Pol in the early stages of Trellium-D poisoning.Trellium-D is a potent neurotoxin to the Vulcan nervous system. It disrupts the synaptic pathways that allow them to control emotions, and the rate of decay accelerates. It can be treated with synaptic regeneration if caught very early. If allowed to progress, the damage is irreversible, according to Dr. Phlox. This drug is injected. It helps humans doing strenuous activity in thin atmospheres, such as Vulcan. McCoy pretended to inject this into Captain Kirk during Spock's Koon-ut-Kal-if-fee. In fact, he injected him with a neuroparalyzer to simulate death and end the challenge. (TOS: Amok Time) McCoy also used a triox compound to treat Kirk when he was rescued from interphase, because his oxygen supply had nearly run out. (TOS: The Tholian Web)

Tri-ox compound is also used to compensate for high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a Class-L planet. The recommended dosage for an adult human is 15 millimeters every four hours. After taking the medication for awhile, a person's cardiopulmonary system will have strengthened allowing them to better withstand the effects. (DS9: The Sound of Her Voice)
